9th Annual Quality Education Conference: Strengthening Opportunities to Learn in Challenging Economic Times

With almost all states facing significant education budget deficits, it is particularly essential to develop nuanced strategies and take steps to maintain and promote quality education. As such, the National Access Network at Teachers College, Columbia University, the Education Justice Project of the Education Law Center, and Education Voters invite you to discuss and learn about current education issues at the 9th Annual Quality Education Conference: Strengthening Opportunities to Learn in Challenging Economic Times. The conference will take place at the Service Employees International Union (SEIU Building), in Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C. on Thursday, May 7 at 12:00 p.m. and will conclude on Friday, May 8, 2009 at 2:00 pm.

Once again, this year’s conference will bring together plaintiff litigators, educators, advocates, and policy experts to engage in a multi-faceted approach to education reform. The preliminary agenda includes dynamic sessions on pressing issues such as state constitutional perspectives on blocking education budget cuts, NCLB re-authorization, the possibilities or pitfalls that could stem from the federal stimulus bill, and educational opportunities for English language learners and immigrants in light of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision, Flores v. Arizona. As always, plenary and workshop sessions will feature discussions on the current status of education in the United States, individual reports and updates from states, and hands-on workshops for litigators, advocates, organizers, policymakers, and educators.

Online registration will commence at the end of this week, and an e-mail will be sent indicating its start. The fee for the conference is only $150. We have reserved a block of rooms at a reduced rate at the Beacon Hotel. To make your hotel reservation, please contact the Beacon Hotel at 202-296-2100. Specify that you are with the Quality Education Conference to obtain the group rate. To qualify for the reduced hotel rates, reservations should be made before April 6, 2009.
