Editorial: "100% Solution" Fails the Test

Recently, the Fordham Institute issued a "manifesto" titled Fund the Child: Tackling Inequity and Antiquity in School Finance, which lists dozens of signatories from across the political spectrum. Since many of us have worked diligently over the years to tackle inequities in education finance, we would like to be able to invite others to climb on a bandwagon in support of a better funding scheme. Unfortunately, however, the proposal for Weighted Student Funding (WSF), touted as the "100% Solution" in this report, would actually be more harmful than helpful to children’s interests.

New Hampshire Supreme Court Requires State to Define an Adequate Education

On September 8, 2006, the New Hampshire Supreme Court ordered the state to define a "constitutionally adequate education" by June 2007, in Londonderry School District v. State. After recounting the state's years of failing to establish this definition, the court concluded that it is willing to defer to the legislature one more time, and that "in the absence of action…, a judicial remedy is not only appropriate, but essential" in order to vindicate the constitutional rights of New Hampshire's students.

Give Kids Good Schools Campaign Urges Public to "Learn, Vote, Act!"

"When it comes to the importance of improving our public schools, Americans do get it," said Wendy D. Puriefoy, president of the Public Education Network, at the recent launch of multi-year campaign – Give Kids Good Schools – which intends to build a constituency of Americans who will use their voices and votes to achieve the goal of quality public education for all children. On November 13 and 14, 2006, the Campaign for Educational Equity at Teachers College, Columbia University will host a symposium titled "Examining America's Commitment to Closing Achievement Gaps: NCLB and its Alternatives," in order to substantially advance the national conversation about educational equity through solid scholarly research.
