Final Race to the Top requirements address
funding equity issues
After
months of public debate over its notice
of proposed priorities, requirements, definitions
and selection criteria (NPP),
the U.S. Department of Education released
the final
requirements governing the distribution
of $4.3 billion in Race to the Top (RTTT)
grants, the discretionary portion of federal
stimulus funds aimed at promoting innovation
in education, on November 18.

Two Florida lawsuits seek to enforce new
constitutional provisions
After
plaintiffs narrowly lost a major education
adequacy case in 1995, education advocates
in Florida turned to the state's initiative
and referendum process. Voters approved
an amendment to the state constitution in
the November 1998 election that dramatically
strengthened the education clause...Two
recent lawsuits are now alleging that the
state has failed to provide an adequate
education in accordance with these enhanced
requirements.

The Campaign for Educational Equity's
fifth annual equity symposium, “Stimulating
Equity?: The Impact of the American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) on Educational
Opportunity,” will be held on February
8 and 9, 2010 at Teachers College, Columbia
University. This event will be the first
major national forum to analyze, in-depth,
the impact of the ARRA ( the federal “stimulus
bill” ) on educational equity and
on educational opportunity.
