Litigation Strategies for Hard Economic Times

A December 6, 2010, Stateline.org article on a new Kansas lawsuit challenging the state’s recent budget cuts recognizes that Kansas is just one of a number of states where this scenario is playing out. More lawsuits are likely to be filed in the months ahead, as legislatures--confronted with yet another year of deep budget cuts-- opt to scale back education spending.

Studies Show Positive Impact of CFE Funding

A retrospective on the Klein years—which might also be called the post-CFE years—was recently provided at a conference convened on November 20, 2010 by American Institutes for Research to report on the results of the “New York City Education Reform Retrospective Project” funded by the Gates, Carnegie, Dell and Robertson Foundations. The conference makes it clear that one of the main driving forces behind many of the positive changes in the city’s schools has been the availability of sufficient funds that allowed the system to innovate and improve.

William J. Mathis: Lessons from the PISA Scores

For the twenty-seventh year, government officials have yet again been surprised, shocked and dismayed over the latest international test score rankings. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said “We have to see this as a very serious wake-up call.” Former Reagan education official Checker Finn reported that he was “kind of stunned” by the results of the Program for International Student Achievement (PISA) results. In hyperbolic overdrive, he compared the results to Pearl Harbor and sputnik.
