The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF)

MALDEF describes itself as a nonprofit Latino litigation, advocacy and educational outreach institution. According to MALDEF, its mission is to foster sound public policies, laws and programs to safeguard the civil rights of Latinos living in the United States and to empower the Latino community to fully participate in our society.

Mississippi Center for Justice

The Mississippi Center for Justice describes itself as a nonprofit corporation dedicated to legal advocacy for racially and economically disadvantaged individuals and communities in Mississippi. The Center hopes to galvanize other activist groups by providing them with the legal support, expert advice, and community connections necessary for success in obtaining social justice. The Center hopes to use best-practice models from other states to create effective partnerships and movements for reform. Though the Center works on numerous social justice issues, education is an important focus. The Center has partnered with two prominent education advocacy groups, Southern Echo and the Mississippi Education Working Group, to build on and expand the work of these groups in engaging the public and demanding higher standards for public schools in Mississippi.

Mississippi Education Working Group (MEWG)/Southern Echo

Since 1996, MEWG has sought to support the development of effective community-based organizing of parents and students that will work for educational improvements at the state and local level. It is composed of 14 grassroots organizations, representing 12 rurual districts around the Delta region. Areas of focus: school construction, teacher quality, school funding.

Southern Echo

Southern Echo, established in 1989, describes itself as a leadership education, training and development organization committed to building new, accountable grassroots leadership and organization, based on an inter-generational model, through training, technical and legal assistance. Echo staff works with and in support of African-American and working class community leadership and organizations throughout rural Mississippi, and organizations in 11 other Southern states. Echo training focuses on enabling grassroots people to develop effective skills and the working tools of community organizing. This includes the building of political skills, organizational development and policy formation at the grassroots level.
